My Soul Is a Woman: The Feminine in Islam by Annemarie Schimmel

My Soul Is a Woman: The Feminine in Islam by Annemarie Schimmel examines the feminine dimension of Islam, a feature of the tradition that is often misunderstood or overlooked.

Drawing on a lifetime of engagement with Islamic cultures and on texts from Arabic, Turkish, Persian and Indo-Muslim traditions, the book reconstructs how women appear in the Qur'an, in the conception of the Prophet, and in the mystical tradition. It considers holy mothers and unmarried women as manifestations of the Divine, and the feminine language through which Muslim spirituality has often expressed itself.

What readers will explore:

• The role and image of women in the Qur'an and in Prophetic teaching
• The feminine language of Islamic mysticism
• Holy mothers and women as spiritual figures
• Islamic spirituality across Arabic, Turkish, Persian and Indo-Muslim cultures

Who this book is for: Readers interested in women in Islam, Sufism and Islamic spirituality, and anyone looking for a more complete picture of the feminine in Muslim tradition.
