Street Corner Society by William Foote Whyte

Street Corner Society by William Foote Whyte is a classic study of an Italian-American community in Boston, based on close, first-hand observation.

The book follows the life of a neighbourhood through its street gangs, its social clubs and its everyday relationships, showing a community with its own organisation and rules rather than the disorder outsiders assumed. It became a landmark in sociology for its method as much as for its findings.

What readers will explore:

• An Italian-American neighbourhood studied at close quarters
• Street life, gangs and social organisation
• Community rules beneath apparent disorder
• A landmark in sociological fieldwork

Who this book is for: Students of sociology and anthropology, and readers interested in community life.
