Women in the Qur'an, Traditions, and Interpretation by Barbara Freyer Stowasser

Women in the Qur'an, Traditions, and Interpretation by Barbara Freyer Stowasser is a study of the women of Islamic sacred history and of how their stories have been read and interpreted across the centuries.

The book presents the Qur'anic accounts of female figures associated with God's prophets, from the earliest narratives to the time of Muhammad, and then follows those accounts through medieval, modern and contemporary interpretation. It draws on theological exegesis as well as Hadith and popular narrative material, showing how the same figures have been understood differently in different periods and what those readings reveal about Islamic thought.

What readers will explore:

• The women of the Qur'an and their place in sacred history
• Classical and modern interpretation of the Qur'anic narratives
• Hadith, popular narrative and legal tradition on women
• How interpretations of these figures have changed over time

Who this book is for: Readers interested in the Qur'an, women in Islam, and Islamic intellectual history, including students of religion and history.
